A Children's Film Foundation production set in Suffolk.
A Children's Film Foundation production featuring stolen antiques and buried treasure, set in Rendlesham Forest and on the River Deben at Woodbridge in Suffolk. When a brother and sister are sent to stay with their industrious uncle at his forest cottage, their trip gets off to a rocky start when they clash with a pair of rival siblings, whose father is the Chief Forester. But when the uncle reveals plans to uncover a Saxon ship buried under a mound in the forest, the children must join forces to foil a pair of bumbling crooks, who have used the mound to bury a gold cup stolen from the local museum. Overpowered, the children chase the crooks through the forest and along the river, contending with a major fire - caused by a cigarette, carelessly discarded by one of the crooks - the children enlist the help of police and locals along the way, but will they catch the culprits and recover the stolen treasure?

Background Information
'The Secret of the Forest' was produced by the Children's Film Foundation, whose chief aim was to supplant the unsuitably violent (and chiefly American) films screened at highly popular Saturday morning children's matinees, and replace them with locally produced films which often carried a moral message and were deemed more age appropriate.
