[Perkins of Peterborough] News Review

1950s , Ketton (Rutland)

Newsreel for the staff of F. Perkins Ltd

Village Of Stone: In the quiet village of Ketton, Rutland, with its 13th Century Saxon Church, lives Britain's largest industrial works, The Ketton Portland Cement Co Ltd. The men and infrastructure at the Ketton Cement Works produce their high quality cement from limestone and clay. The company's own trains transport the product to different parts of the works, and are then hoisted and tipped into large vats. Perkins P6 and R6 engines power the transport fleet for the bagged cement to its buyers, including Perkins themselves. Perkins used Ketton Cement at their Eastfield Headquarters at Peterborough on their extention. Mr. Frank Perkins High Sheriff: Appointed by Her Majesty The Queen, Chairman of F. Perkins Ltd, Frank Perkins has been appointed to be High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, leaves the ceremony in Cambridge to attend the opening of the Winter Assizes. However, before that, more venerated ceremony is due to take place, as the High Sheriff and his procession march through the gates of Trinity College to the Judges Lodging. An assembled crowd of academics and officials meet to pay their respects to the Assize Court Judge. "Bluebird" Goes By Diesel!: From the headquarters of Graham Adams Ltd, motor engineers begin their day's work. However, today is no ordinary day as it involves the collection of Donald Campbell's recording breaking "Bluebird", on a Perkins-powered articulated low loader. The company in the past has transported the turbojet hydroplane to the Lake District for trials and record attempts, but today the transporter is going into central London for the Lord Mayor's Show. The pageant rolls down Fleet Street as spectators watch from the pavement. A procession dedicated to the history of the aluminium industry features several decorated floats, including "Bluebird". All the floats in the Aluminium pageant are pulled by Peterborough-made diesel engines, unlike the Lord Mayor who traditionally is always pulled in a horse-drawn carriage. Next for the Perkins drawn "Bluebird" is a spot at the National Boat Show at Hammersmith, which features an array of yachts, cruisers, sloops and motor boats. Plenty of enthusiasts are welcomed by Lord Hailsham, who opens the event, before visiting the Perkins stand and talking to Richard Perkins. Perkins has on display its full range of gleaming diesel marine engines, as well as a P6 underwater engine.
