Men of Steel:

The northern industrial landscape of Rotherham, home of the world renowned iron and steel works, Templeborough Rolling Mills, producing hot rolled steel in the form of rod. Inside the mills, carbon steel billets are heated, cooled, twisted and cut. Finished rods, travelling in steel pipeways, progress to the winding wheels. Red hot wire is coiled and pushed onto a conveyor. The change-over unit transfers coils to the bundle carrier. Workers known as enders, tallymen, banders, and twitchers enable the 24-hour continuous operation. The boom arm on the Perkins powered forklift truck ensures smooth handling of the finished coils for storing or loading.

Plane Sailing:

Staff belonging to the Perkins Flying Club enjoy a meal outdoors and a pre-flight briefing before taking their powerless glider onto a nearby airfield. The winch, powered by a Perkins P6 diesel, launches the glider. The Land Rover for cable retrieval is powered by a P4 engine. The engines are the most economical for this type of activity.

Preflight drill is performed, and the launching cable is secured to the plane. The man on the bat sends a signal to the winch operator, and the slack is taken up. A view from the plane illustrates the smooth take-off. The pilot pulls the cable release at 1200 feet. There are views of the plane in the air with the landscape below. A solo pilot performs aerobatics, then after a speed reducing manoeuvre, the glider is landed. Finally, a woman is given final instructions before taking off for her first solo flight.

Doing the rounds:

A brief history of Colchester and its castle, and the exhibits in the museum. A Colchester Corporation truck brings quarried stone to bolster the castle walls. It is part of an entire fleet powered by Perkins diesel engines, the most economical for low mileage municipal vehicles.

On the streets of Colchester, refuse collecting vehicles powered by Perkins diesel power units, compress waste as it is tipped in by the refuse workers. Cardboard and paper are stored separately in the trailer. On arrival at the refuse depot, the paper is sorted, compressed and baled. Unsaleable refuse is offloaded in layers at the dumping ground. A gully and cesspool emptier is featured as further evidence of the economical running costs of Perkins engines. Finally, a Perkins P3V powers a mechanical road sweeper.
